Seyi Shay Biography, Family, Early Life And Education

Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua (Seyi Shay) was born on the 21st of December 1985 in Tottenham, London, United Kingdom to Nigerian parents. Her father is a native of Ife while her mother hailed from the Northern Nigeria. She has three siblings, a sister and two brothers and they were raised by their single mother.
Seyi Shay started visiting Nigeria when she was very young and schooled at the Command High School in Maryland, Lagos before returning to London for her undergraduate studies.
Her late mother and sisters were among those influenced her interest in music. Her mother was a chorister while her sister used to compose songs for TV. In addition, her brother was a radio and club disc jockey.
Seyi Shay started performing at the age of 6 after joining her secondary school choir. She was applauded for her performances in Japan the London Community Gospel Choir world tour, which included 13 cities in Japan.
Shay has a degree from a local UK college where studied music. She also studied business management at the University of East London.

Seyi Shay's music career elevated when she got her first record deal with No Apology, a record label affiliated with George Martin. In 2006, she formed Boadicea, a girl band that was managed by the founder and manager of All Saints and Sugababes, Ron Tom.
The girl band separated after two years and Seyi Shay  decided to partake in the From Above UK singing audition in which she emerged as the lead vocalist for the group. The From Above group signed a deal with Mathew Knowles' management company and were taken to Houston to go through energetic vocal and dance trainings.
The From Above group worked with Beyoncé during her I Am... World Tour in the United Kingdom. They also had their own MTV reality show called Breaking From Above which aired in over 166 countries and presented an award at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2011. The group later disassembled after a few years of releasing songs.
After the disassembling, Seyi Shay was given the opportunity to secure a recording contract with Sony as well as continue her deal with Mathew Knowle but she decided to Flytime Music. While in the United Kingdom she worked with a good number of musicians including Brian Michael Cox, Rob Knoxx, Justin Timberlake, Cameron Wallace, Darey,  Chip, Bilal, H-Money and Michelle Williams.

Seyi Shaw first met Sound Sultan during his 2011 visit to London. Sound Sultan advised her to relocate and pursue her music career in Nigeria after listening to some of her demos. She was also introduced to Cecil Hammond and he signed her to his record label, Flytime Music and decided to launch her solo career in Nigeria.
Sey Shay left Flytime Music in 2013 and during an interview with Vanguard newspaper, she revealed that her departure was without feuds. According to her, her major purpose of joining the label was to promote her brand and she achieved that. She was very much in control of her brand during the period she was with Flytime Music and still maintained a relationship with the label after her departure.
Seyi Shay cited her mother, Beyoncé, 2face Idibia, Tina Turner, Omawumi, Wizkid and Sound Sultan as her mentors.
