Reportedly born on the 5th of September, 1918, Nipsey Russell was an American comedian, dancer and poet.
He is best known for his appearances as a panelist on game shows from the 1960s through to the 1990s, including Password, Match Game, Hollywood Squares, Pyramid and To Tell the Truth.

There have been a lot of controversies surrounding the actual date of his birth, and at the time of his death in 2005, Nipsey's friends said he was 80, as reported in his obituaries, New York Times obituary gave his birthdate as the 13th of October, 1924 while Federal records suggest that he was born in 1918
He attended the Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta and had his university education at the before serving as a medic in the US Army during the World War II, having enlisted as a private on the 27th of June, 1941.
He returned from Europe in the year 1945 as a second lieutenant and began his comedy career  in the 1940s as a carhop at the Atlanta drive-in The Varsity, where he increased the tips he earned by making customers laugh.

Russell joined with film comedian Mantan Moreland for a stage act in 1952, replacing Ben Carter as Moreland's dapper straight man

He became the first black performer to become a regular panelist on a daily network game show, and that was after joining ABC's Missing Links in 1964. Another ABC show, Rhyme and Reason, had poetry as a premise:

In 1971 he started as a featured panelist on To Tell the Truth, which led to his being hired for The Match Game when Goodson-Todman Productions revived it two years later.


Nipsey Russell died in the year 2005 at age 87 in New York City. He had suffered from cancer and was cremated and had his ashes scattered in the Atlantic Ocean.
