Born on the 5th of March, 1937, Chief Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, GCFR is a Nigerian former military head state and president.
He was born in Abeokuta, South-West Nigeria and joined the Nigerian Army in 1958. He had a 21-year old military career, which included serving in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the former Zaire as well commanding the 3rd Marine Commando Division during Nigeria's 30-month Biafran civil war, from 1967 to 1970.

OBJ was appointed the minister for works and housing and he later become the chief of staff, supreme headquarters.
From 1976 to 1979, he was the Nigerian military head of state, following the assassination of General Murtala Muhammad, and was the first military leader to hand over to a democratic government, in an election which was won by civilian northern politician Shehu Shagari.
He founded the African Leadership Forum in 1988, and it was based at his Otta farm. In 1991, he failed in bid to become UN Secretary-General and in 1995, he was tried and sentenced to life imprisonment for planning a coup against military leader General Sani Abacha.

The jail term were later reduced to 15 years after much pressure from South Africa's Nelson Mandela, former United States President Jimmy Carter and former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt.
He won the Nigerian presidential election on the 27th of February, 1999 and ruled for two tenures.
