Alsarah was born in Khartoum, Sudan in the year 1982 to human rights activist parents. They fled the country during the 1989 coup by Omar al-Bashir to avoid being killed as dissidents and then lived in Taez, Yemen for sometime.
They fled again due to the country's 1994 civil war and settled in Boston, United States claiming political asylum.
Alsarah found solace in music during this turbulent period, and listened to bootleg recordings in Yemen while taking piano lessons from a family friend.
She studied ethnomusicology at the Wesleyan University, graduated in 2004 and moved to New York to begin a professional music career.
Doing various odd jobs to support herself, Alsarah became a singer for the Zanzibari band Sound of Tarab and was singing in Arabic.
She has since then released a good number of songs, music videos and albums. Alsarah has listed Abd El Gadir Salim and Hamza El Din among her favorite Sudanese and Nubian artists.
